A Reflection on Prayer

People bowing, incense burning, smoke and smell

Dances through the morning air. At a glance, it seems

An empty action, incense burned to no one.

However, there is power in the desire to pray.

We were made to speak to our Creator.

A desire welling up deep within us.

Yet without guidance or person, it burst out like

Water from a dam, seeking direction and purchase and finding none.

It is not an empty action, this burning incense, bowing, praying.

It is a cry for something beyond the self. Oh, that people searching,

Souls longing for solid ground would find the rock of Christ.

No incense need be burned.

No false appeasement.

In Christ is found relationship.

No platitudes or ritual needed.

No grasping at shadows, but profound love.

Found in the personable God.

“Morning Sun Rising,

Incense dancing in cool air,

Wisps of searching, hope.”
