As we start the book of Genesis, there is much to consider. One thing that we will be considering is the first audience. Moses wrote Genesis to prepare Israel to enter the promised land. So Moses began where all good stories start: the beginning.

The first chapter of Genesis is all about God moving creation from chaos to order. He initiates creation. There was no obligation to create. All that we see and know result from God's free will.

He forms and He fills. Moses told his people that God is not a regional god like those they have and would encounter. Their God is the God of all creation. Therefore, He was King over creation.

As Moses wove the creation story, he did so to teach basic truths about the God of Israel. We, too, read Genesis to learn who God is and what He is like.

We learn that God desires order and not chaos. We learn that God sits above all creation. He speaks, and it happens. God deems creation good. I love how the Jesus Storybook Bible says it. "They were good because God said they were good." We must remember that it is God who determines what is good and what is not good.

So let us take time today and remember that God created all we see for His glory. He is the King. How are we living our day-to-day lives in light of this reality? Do we submit to God as King?
